YouTube is an awesome video sharing website that literally exploded on the web back in 2005. You can literally see just about anything from clips of the latest TV programmes and movies, pop videos and live concert footage to clips of cute pets and people falling over.
A huge amount of the content is user generated but increasingly organizations like the BBC, CBS an Hulu offer some of their material via the site as part of the YouTube partnership program. Many bands also have their own channels where you can see exclusive content of songs old and new and live action clips.
In 2006 YouTube was taken over by Google and now operates as a subsidiary on the search engine giant. Since 2007 Google introduced a localization system and now the website is available with localized versions in 38 countries and a USA version.
What this means is that when you visit the YouTube website you are offered only the local version chosen on the basis of your IP address and this could mean that you often see the message “This video is not available in your country” because of copyright restrictions or inappropriate content.
In some countries, most notably China, YouTube is blocked altogether and even in Western democracies YouTube is often blocked in schools and colleges.
It is possible to get around these blocks and watch a YouTube video that is not available in your country by using a web proxy which can alter your IP address however the most effective method is to use a virtual private network or VPN.
A good VPN services will offer multiple server locations around the globe so you can connect via a different server location to your own. In this way YouTube will offer a different local version from which you can now watch the video.
